A local political party (one of the Big Three) pushed some literature through my door yesterday. On the front, we are told that the minority Council administration (another of the Big Three)
capitulated to [the Third party's] demands to slash spending on staff, without really knowing what the impact on services will be.
On the back, we are told that the same administration, in conjunction with that same party,
cut £338,000 from budgets to pay staff at a time of global credit crisis.
I'm confused: did they slash spending on staff to the detriment of services, or did they raid services to pay for staff?
Meanwhile, this party wanted to
reduce primary school meals from £2.05 to £1.05,
which sounds like a genuine cut aimed at a genuine service. Given that they are in favour of higher spending on services, it seems a little bizarre to be trumpetting a proposal which sounds, quite literally, like taking food out of the mouths of children.
There must be some real geniuses in local party politics.
